Auslage in Arbeit

Hartberg, a city in crisis? Shops in the old town are empty, the pedestrian zone is less frequented, the citizens’ negative attitude towards their own city can be felt. This self-image however is countered by an incredibly active, picturesque city with a large number of committed citizens. The participatory design project “Auslage in Arbeit” responses to this situation with the aim of increasing the visibility of what already exists, as opposed to what might be missing. In the chourse of two weeks meetings of cultural and social associations, the majors consultation hours, rehearsals by artists, school lessons, exhibitions and much more, are being relocated into 5 inner city vaccanies. The actions and collected conversations are published in four small zines. The work aims to initiate a process that enlivens the inner city through non-commercial use, shows possibilities of available space, connects residents and creates awareness for the high level of commitment of the population. It reminds in a subtle way of what makes the city of Hartberg special instead of what it lacks.
